Load increase
The permissible total weight of a caravan or motorhome can be increased by adding a load while the unladen weight remains the same. For example, an additional suspension is installed or a more powerful wheel-tyre combination is used. The extra load then allows a higher payload, without exceeding the permissible total weight. In addition, a higher load can increase driving comfort and safety.
However, a load increase can have various consequences which motorhome owners should be aware of. Thus, toll costs may increase due to the higher total weight. In addition, re-approval may be required. The higher weight also makes it possible to reduce the maximum permissible speed or to require additional safety equipment.
Drivers usually have to check whether the existing driving licence class is sufficient after a load increase.
