The hitch eye is a device that secures the breakaway cable of a trailer to the towing vehicle. In the event that the trailer uncontrollably detaches from the trailer coupling, the breakaway cable tightens and releases the trailer's brakes. If the breakaway cable is only laid over the trailer coupling beforehand, it can slip off the coupling together with the trailer. This is prevented by the additional securing device on the hitch eye and the trailer is reliably braked.
