Breakaway rope
The breakaway rope is an important safety feature on caravan trailers. The sheathed, thin steel cable pulls the trailer's brake when it detaches from the trailer coupling. A breakaway cable is mandatory in Germany for unbraked caravans (trailers) with a total mass between 750 and 3,500 kilograms. It should be attached to a component firmly connected to the towing vehicle. In the Netherlands, Switzerland and Austria, attachment to an eyelet is mandatory. A breakaway cable is also prescribed there for braked trailers. In case of non-compliance severe fines may be imposed.
