Clean waste-holding tank thoroughly

Step-by-step guide

Even if the waste-holding tank is emptied often and flushed with water, deposits will form over time. They must be removed so that they do not attack the material of the tank. In this step-by-step guide, I'll show you how.

Products for cleaning the waste-holding tank

Here you can find all cleaning products for the waste-holding tank in the Berger online shop.

Do not use household cleaners to clean the waste-holding tank. These attack the seals and other components of the tank and damage them permanently. To thoroughly clean the waste-holding tank, there are special products that are gentle on the material and harmless to use.

When using Berger Fresh Tank Cleaner, 100 ml of the cleaning liquid is mixed with 5 litres of water. The contents of the bottle are therefore sufficient for 3-4 cleaning processes. The bottle has a sight strip on the side for optimum dosing of the product and a cap with a child lock.

200 ml of Thetford Duo Tank Cleaner is mixed with 5 litres of water. The mixture should be left to soak for at least 16 hours before it can be emptied out again. The contents of the bottle are sufficient for four cleaning processes when dosed correctly. The bottle has a sight strip on the side to make dosing easier and a cap with a child lock. The liquid smells slightly of disinfectant when diluted, and the consistency is liquid. The product can also be used for cleaning the grey water tank.

Products intended only for cleaning the waste-holding tank are not suitable as a permanent sanitary additive.

After you have carefully cleaned the waste-holding tank, you should also take care of the toilet seal. This will prevent it from becoming porous and leaking and needing to be replaced. Here you can find out in detail how to do this. The seal care product from Thetford was specially developed for use on toilet seals. It is completely odourless and can be dosed correctly thanks to the small tube.

Here you can find all the cleaning products presented in this article in the Berger online shop.

Before you can clean the waste-holding tank, you must empty it. Here you can find out how to empty the waste-holding tank of your camping toilet properly. After that, this step-by-step guide will help you to clean the waste-holding tank of your camping toilet properly.

If you do not want to shake the waste-holding tank, you can now also slide it back into the caravan or motorhome and go for a drive. Let the cleaner-water mixture soak in the tank for several hours. Depending on the cleaning agent, this is 8-24 hours.

Then empty the tank at a designated place. This can be the toilet at home or the disposal station at the campsite. Press the ventilation button while doing this.

Finally, fill the tank again with lukewarm water, shake it and empty it. Repeat this step until only clear water comes out of the waste-holding tank.

Finally, spray the seal of the toilet slide. Work the spray in with a kitchen towel.

Allow the waste-holding tank to dry completely before putting it back into the caravan or motorhome. Store the waste-holding tank dry, empty and with the slide open.

How often must the waste-holding tank be cleaned?

If you only use your camping toilet for a few weeks a year, it is sufficient to clean the waste-holding tank thoroughly before winter storage. If you use it regularly, it is recommended to clean the cassette tank two to three times a year. Regular cleaning can also slow down the formation of new deposits on the inside of the waste-holding tank.

CamperClean, a fully automatic disposal station for toilet cassettes, is already available at over 400 campsites. A CamperClean machine empties and cleans the waste-holding tank completely without you having to touch it during the cleaning process. Then the cassette is filled with chemical-free sanitary concentrate. Cleaning your waste-holding tank in a CamperClean machine is therefore only suitable for thorough cleaning in between, but not before winter storage.
