about the author
Fabian Schmitz, born in 1977, moved to the far north after studying geography and environmental sciences. Since 2008 he has been working as a wilderness guide in Canada's Yukon Territory. He explores nature there on foot, by canoe and by dog sled. Through his work as a survival trainer, first aid instructor and with Search & Rescue, he has a professional approach to the subject.

Brief Description
What to do if you get lost? How do you cope in the wilderness when you're stranded without gear after your canoe drifts away in a capsize?

Countless travelers head to remote wilderness areas in search of recreation and adventure. But time and again, even the smallest mistakes lead to serious emergencies - and sometimes the ultimate disaster.
In this book, Fabian Schmitz shows what has gone wrong on other expeditions and how professional survival training can help to master emergency situations or - better yet - avoid them through preventive measures

Risk management, safety-related tour planning and avoiding accidents on tour are as much a part of the content as strategies for emergencies that have already occurred. The author explains how to start a warming fire, build a protective shelter, prepare water, and find food, and provides guidance on effective distress signals, navigation tips, and survival gear considerations.
