Porta Potti camping toilet: What are the different models?
The Porta Potti is available as a mobile camping toilet and as a practical built-in toilet. Thetford's chemical toilet designs include simple folding versions and luxury models such as the Porta Potti Excellence.Unlike a dry toilet, the chemical toilets with comfortable seat heights between 30 and 41 cm have a practical bellows or piston flush. The luxury versions of the Porta Potti camping toilet also have a fill level indicator on the waste-water tank.

Camping toilet: How does a Porta Potti work?
The Porta Potti camping toilet consists of a toilet bowl with removable toilet seat and lid with fresh water tank and a lightweight grey water or waste-holding tank. A latch at the back allows you to easily separate these two parts so that you can transport and clean the camping toilet.The standard models have a bellows pump, where pressing the flush button pumps the bellows down and the water up. The high-quality models have a piston pump, where the water moves in a cylinder, so that a stronger jet is produced and the cleaning effect is better.
Tip: With the right water disinfection and purification you always have fresh water.
Chemical toilet: How is a Porta Potti emptied and cleaned?
With the Porta Potti, it is recommended to empty the waste-water tank at least every three days, even if the sanitary fluid is blue. The more people use the chemical toilet, the more often you have to empty and clean the camping toilet. The fill level indicator shows when the faeces or waste-water tank is almost full and you should empty it quickly.First, find a suitable emptying station for the camping toilet - these are available at many campsites or often at petrol stations. Under no circumstances should you empty the waste-water tank of a chemical toilet in the normal sewerage system!
And this is how you empty the Porta Potti:
- You can remove the tank with the slide closed via the lock on the toilet.
- To empty the Porta Potti, press the vent button - if available - or hold the outlet spout down and open it slowly. The contents of the waste-holding tank now run into the emptying station provided for this purpose.
- For optimal cleaning, rinse the camping toilet thoroughly with water, fill a suitable sanitary fluid into the waste-holding tank and reassemble the Porta Potti.
- Afterwards, you can additionally fill the fresh water tank with a sanitary fluid from above.
